It is based on the subdivision of slabs into three types, viz. (1) stable slabs, (2) intermediate stiffened rafts, (3) heavy stiffened rafts. The paper gives a method of deciding from a site investigation which type of slab is required. If only type 1 or 2 is needed then a standard design may be used and suitable dimensions are given. For type 3 slabs a detailed design method, based on beam-on-mound studies, is described. The paper also gives a simplified procedure for the Melbourne area based on the geological origin of the soil, for selecting slab types. Various aspects of design details and construction methods are also described. The paper is addressed primarily to engineers, architects, building authorities and builders, and is consistent with the Victoria Building Regulations (1983).
