Episode one describes ancient Chinese technologies which played a major part in the scientific and industrial revolution in Europe. The next episode examines the interplay and conflict between Europe and the East, culminating in the fall of the conservative and insular Chinese Empire in the face of mercantile greed and the military might of 19th century European imperialism. Episode three describes China and Japan's differing responses to the need to modernise, transforming Japan from an isolated island into an industrial giant, able to challenge Imperial China.
